How to be a FANTASTIC Swim Parent
- Be your child's biggest fan! Support them, be positive and help them feel good about themselves, no matter what, and especially after a poor swim!
- Let the coaches coach! Please do not disrupt coaches during practice. Stay off the pool deck. Need to talk to a coach? Send an email or see them after practice.
- Do not disrupt their swim training. Get your swimmer to practice every day, and be on time (and pick them up on time). Encourage them to do their best while they are at practice, but please do not try to coach them or scold them during practice.
- Pay attention to the team rules on attending, entering and scratching from meets.
- Make the season a fun one for both you and your swimmers!
- Be kind to your parents reps! They are VOLUNTEERS!

Parent “JOBS”
All families are expected to work during our swim season (some may be asked to work more; for example, officials). Swim meets cannot be run effectively without the help and cooperation of all parents. Sign-ups for jobs will occur on the web site when the meets are posted. If you are signed up for a job for a meet, and then cannot make that meet, you must find a suitable replacement.
Below is an example of jobs for a typical season:
- Check-in: Must be able to arrive early. Must arrive early and check people in for their job duty so that they receive credit. Hand out stop watches.
- Setup: Responsible for carrying all equipment, setting up scoring tables, flags, starting blocks, and anything else needed. Must be able to carry heavy items.
- Breakdown/Cleanup: Responsible for meet clean up. Take down flags, tables, return all equipment to storage area. Must be able to carry heavy items.
- Scoring Table: There is a scorer and an averager from each team. Responsible for recording swimmers times, determining order of finish and tallying team points. Please note, some basic math and logic skills are required for these positions.
- Runner: Responsible retrieving timer and Across the Board sheets from each lane and delivering them to the scorers table during the meet.
- Table Helper: Running gives tickets and DQ slips to this person. They will organize them and put them in order before giving to average/scorer.
- Timers: Responsible for operating the stopwatch to record a swimmer’s time on the timer sheet. There are 2 timers per lane, one from each team, one timer records the swimmers names and stopwatch times on the timer sheet.
- Sales: Responsible for sitting at a table selling food items, drinks, shirts, caps, tattoos, or any other merchandise.
- Marshall: Gather kids for their events. Should be a little familiar with how events run and how to herd cats.
- Officials: Must be YMCA or NJSDC certified. You will likely end up working more meets than the minimum requirement and we love you for that.
